Dodgers Notes: Hernandez, Betts, Edman
The Dodgers' recent trade talks have centered around outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, despite manager Dave Roberts and general manager Brandon Gomes' reluctance to part with the veteran. Hernandez, who is entering the second year of a three-year, $66 million deal, had a down 2025 season, posting a .247/.284/.454 slash line with 25 home runs as LA's primary right fielder. However, he demonstrated decent postseason performance with a .788 OPS.
Initially, Hernandez played center field during his early years in Toronto, but that role has since transitioned. He might be better suited as a designated hitter, but the position is already occupied in LA. Hernandez's defensive struggles have been evident, with a -10 Outs Above Average in 2024 and a -9 in the current year. Manager Roberts, however, disagrees with Statcast's assessment, describing Hernandez's play as 'at least average' in right field.
One player who won't be replacing Hernandez in right field is Mookie Betts, who will remain at shortstop next season. Betts, a six-time Gold Glove award winner in the outfield, has been versatile, splitting time between second base and shortstop in 2024 and making a full-time transition to shortstop in 2025. His defensive prowess is evident, with a +17 Defensive Runs Saved mark last season.
The Dodgers' roster versatility may be impacted by an injury update on Tommy Edman. Edman recently underwent a debridement procedure for his ankle injury and is expected to be limited during Spring Training. The club anticipates a full recovery without significant impact on the season, but the timeline raises doubts about Edman's availability at the start of the year. Edman, an infielder/outfielder, missed significant time in 2024 due to a wrist injury and struggled offensively in 2025, posting a career-worst 81 wRC+ and managing only three steals.
