Facing the Skies: Are Nigerian Airlines Ready for the Airbus A320 Recall?
It's a question on everyone's mind: with the holiday season fast approaching, are Nigerian skies safe? The recent global recall of Airbus A320 aircraft for software updates has raised eyebrows. But, Nigerian airlines are stepping up to reassure travelers that their fleets are ready for the yuletide rush.
During separate conversations with Nigerian operators, the message was clear: no need to worry.
In Nigeria, only United Nigeria Airlines and Air Peace operate A320 aircraft. Ibom Air, which previously used A320-200s, has since transitioned to newer A220 jets. Airbus has also clarified that the software update isn't needed for all A320 models, offering some relief.
Speaking to reporters, George Uriesi, the Acting CEO of Ibom Air, confirmed that their fleet is unaffected. "We have A220s. I don’t think the A220 is affected, though we expect formal confirmation. We will verify on Monday,” he said.
Chibuike Uloka, a spokesperson for UNA, echoed this sentiment, dismissing concerns about flight disruptions. He assured that their Airbus aircraft are "100 per cent safe and not included in the recall." He added, "There is no potential disruption of operations, as we are in good shape."
Air Peace had not responded to inquiries at the time of this report.
Globally, the software bulletin from Airbus affects over half of all A320 aircraft currently in service, according to a Reuters report. At least 15 airlines, including American Airlines, China Eastern, Delta, EasyJet, and Lufthansa, operate the largest A320 fleets and may need to implement the update.
At the time Airbus issued its bulletin, around 3,000 A320-family jets were in the air. The fix involves a relatively straightforward reversion to earlier software, but it must be completed before the affected aircraft can return to regular service.
Some airlines, like American Airlines, Lufthansa, IndiGo, and EasyJet, have already begun temporarily grounding specific aircraft to complete the repair.
Despite the scope of the global recall, Nigerian operators are adamant that travelers should not be concerned as the holiday travel season intensifies.
But here's where it gets controversial... With such a large-scale recall, could there be unforeseen challenges for airlines? Do you think the assurances from Nigerian operators are enough to ease passenger concerns? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
