Nigeria’s PDP in Turmoil: A Bold Power Shift or a Recipe for Deeper Division?
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition party, is once again in the spotlight, but not for reasons it would prefer. In a dramatic turn of events, a faction loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has ousted the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), replacing it with a new leadership team. This move, which has sparked both applause and outrage, comes amidst accusations of moral decay, constitutional breaches, and a loss of credibility within the party’s ranks. But here’s where it gets controversial: Is this a necessary step toward restoring discipline and integrity, or is it a power grab that could further fracture the already divided PDP?
The faction, led by Acting National Chairman Alhaji Abdulrahman Muhammad, dissolved the BoT headed by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara and Secretary Ahmed Makarfi, citing their alleged failure to uphold the party’s moral and constitutional standards. Wabara’s suspension by the Abia State chapter for anti-party activities was the final straw, rendering his leadership 'untenable,' according to Muhammad. The new BoT, inaugurated at a meeting hosted by Wike in Abuja, includes Senator Mao Arukwe Ohuabunwa as Chairman and Hon. Isah Dansidi as Secretary.
Muhammad didn’t hold back in his critique of the previous leadership, accusing them of losing the moral compass that once defined the PDP. He also took aim at suspended National Chairman Umar Damagum, blaming his tenure for the party’s disregard for judicial authority and its internal decay. 'When a party begins to ignore its own constitution, it loses its soul,' Muhammad declared, a statement that resonates deeply in a nation where political parties often prioritize power over principles.
And this is the part most people miss: The crisis isn’t just about leadership—it’s about the very identity of the PDP. Muhammad admitted that the party’s troubles began when it abandoned its zoning principle before the 2015 elections, allowing personal ambition to overshadow equity. The new leadership vows to rebuild the PDP on the foundations of transparency, justice, and adherence to court rulings. But can they deliver?
Senator Jim Nwobodo, a founding father of the PDP, offered a voice of reconciliation, urging members to unite and restore the party’s former glory. He likened the PDP to South Africa’s ANC, a party that has weathered its own storms to remain a dominant force. Nwobodo’s call for a strong reconciliation committee to reach out to aggrieved members is a step in the right direction, but will it be enough to heal deep-seated divisions?
The newly reconstituted BoT issued a seven-point communiqué, pledging to uphold constitutional order, unity, and lawful conduct ahead of the National Convention. They endorsed a credible and inclusive convention but stressed that all processes must align with the party’s constitution, INEC guidelines, and court judgments. However, the decision to postpone the convention pending an appeal has raised eyebrows, with some questioning whether this is a prudent move or a tactical delay.
