Snake River Rainbow Trout Survey Below American Falls Dam: What We Found (2026)

Get ready for an exciting journey into the world of Idaho's aquatic wonders! The recent fish survey conducted by Idaho Fish and Game below the American Falls Dam has revealed some fascinating insights. But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, thought-provoking!

On two separate days in November, a dedicated team of fisheries experts and volunteers embarked on a mission to explore a one-mile stretch of the Snake River. Armed with waders and specialized equipment, they set out to uncover the secrets of the river's diverse fish population.

The results? An impressive haul of 312 rainbow trout, 17 mountain whitefish, and a variety of other species, including smallmouth bass, brown trout, and cutthroat trout. But the real star of the show was the rainbow trout, with a whopping estimated population of 2,000 in just that one-mile stretch!

Now, here's the part most people miss: estimating fish abundance without counting every single fish might seem like a tall order, but our biologists have got it down to a science. By capturing and releasing a large enough sample, they can gain a comprehensive understanding of the fish population.

And this abundance is not just a one-off phenomenon. Idaho's rivers are renowned for their thriving rainbow trout populations, making them a haven for anglers and nature enthusiasts alike.

But the story doesn't end there. The fisheries staff also tagged 200 trout during the survey. Anglers, listen up! If you're lucky enough to catch one of these tagged fish, you play a vital role in our understanding of fish movements and survival rates. By reporting your catch details through Fish and Game's Tag You're It! program, you contribute to valuable research on fish survival and migration patterns.

Idaho Fish and Game is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to manage the fisheries at American Falls Reservoir and the Snake River. In addition to surveys and tagging, hatchery personnel have released an incredible 250,000 rainbow trout fingerlings and over 18,000 catchable-sized trout into the reservoir. And if you're planning a winter fishing trip, Idaho Power has you covered with approximately 9,000 rainbows just waiting to take your bait!

So, there you have it—a glimpse into the world of Idaho's aquatic management. But here's the real question: What do you think about the methods used to estimate fish populations? Do you find them reliable, or do you have alternative suggestions? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
