After a year of strained relations, Somalia and Ethiopia are taking a significant step towards mending their diplomatic ties. This weekend, a pivotal meeting took place in Addis Ababa, signaling a renewed commitment to cooperation.
The gathering, held on Saturday, October 26, 2025, brought together key figures from both nations. Representing Somalia was the State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Ali Mohamed Omar. The Ethiopian delegation was led by their Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The backdrop for these crucial discussions was the Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa. The primary focus? Bolstering the relationship between these neighboring countries. They aim to achieve this through consistent diplomatic efforts and a shared vision for peace, stability, and security across the region.
Both parties doubled down on their dedication to fighting terrorism, fostering regional stability, and reinforcing the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
But here's where it gets controversial...
It's important to remember that just over a week before this meeting, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud made a visit to Ethiopia. This was part of a larger push to normalize and strengthen their bilateral relations.
And this is the part most people miss...
The relationship between Somalia and Ethiopia took a nosedive in early 2024. The root cause? Ethiopia's controversial signing of a maritime Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the self-declared Somaliland administration on January 1, 2024. This agreement sparked significant tension.
Earlier this year, however, the two countries agreed to restore diplomatic representation. This was a major stride toward rebuilding trust after Somalia cut ties over the sea access deal. The deal granted landlocked Ethiopia access to the Red Sea through Somaliland.
