Imagine this: A stadium, a monument to a legacy, bearing a name that stirs both admiration and controversy. The White House recently weighed in on a rather bold suggestion: naming the new stadium for Washington's NFL team after former President Donald Trump. This follows an ESPN report indicating Trump himself expressed interest in this honor.
On Saturday, the White House responded, stating it would be "beautiful" to name the new stadium after Trump. This statement came in the wake of reports that Trump would be attending the Commanders' game against the Detroit Lions.
"That would surely be a beautiful name, as it was President Trump who made the rebuilding of the new stadium possible," said Karoline Leavitt, press secretary for the Republican president.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Washington Commanders, when contacted, declined to comment on the report, as did the office of the city's mayor, Muriel Bowser.
The new stadium is part of a larger deal between the team and the District of Columbia. The project is estimated to cost nearly $4 billion and will be built on the site of the RFK Stadium, where the team played for over three decades, winning three Super Bowls in the 1980s and 1990s. The team will contribute $2.7 billion, and the city will invest roughly $1.1 billion for the stadium, housing, green space, and a sports complex.
And this is the part most people miss... In July, Trump threatened to halt the deal, demanding the team revert to its former name, the Redskins, a name considered offensive to Native Americans. This highlights a recurring theme: Trump's desire to see his name prominently displayed. From real estate ventures to branded products like Bibles and cologne, his name is everywhere.
